Frequently Asked Questions

faq for closet renovation
How does Club Cabinetry compare to Closets By Design, California Closets, and big box stores like IKEA/Home Depot/Lowes?

Club Cabinetry is owner-operated, local, and truly full-service—we handle everything in-house, from your first design appointment to the final install. That means fewer handoffs, tighter quality control, and clear accountability from start to finish.

Many national brands and big box options split across multiple parties; sales rep, manufacturer, third-party installers. We execute the design, planning, manufacturing coordination, and installation, so your project doesn’t get passed around.

Many mass-market closets rely on poor quality, imported components or standardized materials designed for broad distribution. Club Cabinetry exclusively uses American-made materials (sourced from North Carolina) and assemble in our New Jersey facility, giving you a more consistent, high quality build you can feel in the finish and durability.

Installation quality is where “same closet, different result” often happens. Competitors and big box brands almost always use a rotating list of subcontractors, and sometimes with installation as an add-on to the project pricing. Club Cabinetry includes free installation with every closet and it’s completed by our in-house team, so the final result matches the design and the standard we promise.

If anything needs adjustment or replacement, you’re not stuck chasing a third party with Club Cabinetry. We stand behind our work—no runaround, no passing you off to the next guy—because we built it and installed it.

How long does custom closet installation take?

Installation typically takes 1–4 days, depending on closet size and whether you’re also including demo and prep work.

Reach-in closets: usually 1 day (sometimes 1–2 days if it’s a larger reach-in or multiple sections)

Walk-in closets: typically 2–4 days, depending on complexity, accessories, and scope

Full project timeline (from design approval to install) is usually about 3–4 weeks:

Planning + selections: about 1–2 weeks after you sign on (finalizing layout, finishes, hardware, and features)

Production: about 2 weeks once everything is approved and ordered

Installation: 1–4 days, depending on whether we’re doing demo, patching, and painting in addition to the closet install

We schedule installation only once everything is ready (materials delivered + production complete) to keep your project moving efficiently and minimize disruption to your day-to-day routine.

How do I prepare for custom closet installation day?

To ensure a smooth, on-time installation, we ask homeowners to have the space fully ready before our team arrives.

1) Empty the closet completely
Please remove all clothing, hangars, boxes, bins, and stored items from the closet area/room before installation day. If the closet isn’t cleared, our team can’t begin work as scheduled.

2) If demo + prep are not included in your project
If we are not handling the demolition and prep work, we require the space to be fully ready prior to installation:

– Existing closet system removed
– Patchwork completed and fully dry
– Painting completed and fully cured

3) Clear access to the work area
Please provide a clear path to the closet so our team can work efficiently and avoid damage to personal belongings.

Do you remove old shelves, rods, and closet systems during installation?

Yes, demolition and haul-away are available as part of our Demo + Prep Work Package.

With this package, our team will:

Remove old shelving, rods, and existing closet systems
Patch holes and repair the walls as needed
Paint the entire closet so the space is fresh and ready for your new custom installation

Pricing varies by closet size and condition, but Demo + Prep Work typically starts around $400 for a standard 6-foot reach-in closet.

If you don’t add the Demo + Prep Work Package, the closet must be fully cleared and prepared (and patch/paint completed) prior to installation day.

Is wall patching and touch-up painting necessary for closets?

Patching and painting aren’t required for every closet, but highly recommended if you want the finished result to look brand new, not “installed over an old space.”

Patching/painting is usually recommended if:

– Your current closet has wire shelving, brackets, or wall anchors
– There are holes, scuffs, uneven paint lines, or prior repairs (common when existing shelving/units are being removed)
– You’re changing the layout and want a clean, seamless backdrop behind the new design

It may be optional if:

– The walls are already in excellent condition with minimal or no existing shelving
– Your home is new construction
– You’re keeping the same layout and there’s no wall damage to address

If you’d like us to handle it, we offer a Demo + Prep Work Package (patch + paint included). If you’re prepping yourself, just ensure patchwork is fully dry and paint is fully cured before installation day so everything installs cleanly and stays on schedule.

Are custom closets worth it for home resale value on Long Island, NY?

In most cases, yes! Custom closets are “worth it” on Long Island because they improve buyer perception, daily function, and marketability, and they often recover a meaningful portion of their cost at resale (even if they don’t always return 100% like some exterior projects).

What the data says (general resale impact):

– In the 2025 Remodeling Impact data (NAR + NARI), “closet renovation” is listed among the top projects for cost recovery, with NAR reporting an estimated 83% cost recovery for closet renovation in that report.
– Other consumer-facing summaries commonly cite ~50%+ ROI ranges for built-in/custom closet improvements depending on scope and market conditions.

How this translates to Long Island specifically:

Long Island buyers often expect homes to feel finished, efficient, and storage-rich—especially in primary suites and family storage zones. A well-designed closet can make a home feel more “turn-key,” reduce objections during showings, and help your listing stand out (even when the appraisal doesn’t itemize “closet system” as a line item).

Where closets tend to pay off most:

Primary walk-in closet upgrades (most visible “luxury” impact)
Multiple closets / whole-home consistency (primary + key reach-ins like linen, mudroom, kids’ rooms)
Neutral, timeless finishes that appeal to the widest range of buyers

Best practice if resale is the goal:
Do a closet upgrade that looks intentional and elevated (not overly personal), and prioritize the closets a buyer will notice first—primary, entry/mudroom, and linen.

How many design revisions are included before ordering a custom closet?

We don’t put a strict cap on design revisions because our goal is to make sure you feel confident before anything goes into production.

Here’s how the process works:

Before You Commit
We present 3 design concepts with full-color renderings and Good–Better–Best pricing, so you can choose the direction that best fits your space and budget.

After You Choose a Direction
Your designer works with you to fine-tune the final layout, features, finishes, hardware, and colors before any materials are ordered. A moodboard is created so you can see how the selections come together.

Final Approval
We update your rendering during the finalization phase so you can visualize your new closet with the updated selections, then you’ll approve the final design before we place material orders and move into manufacturing.

What materials are used for custom closets and what’s best for durability?

Most custom closets are built with melamine because it’s durable, easy to clean, and cost-effective. Wood veneer over plywood is a premium upgrade for a richer look, and solid wood is typically used for visible details rather than the entire closet.

Melamine: durable, low-maintenance, no painting needed (best overall value)

Wood veneer over plywood: upgraded look/feel, premium option

Solid wood: best for accents like trim, doors, and drawer fronts

For most homes, melamine is the most durable and practical choice for the main closet structure, with optional veneer/solid-wood upgrades for a more elevated finish.

Are your custom closets USA-made, and where are your closets manufactured?

Yes, our custom closets are completely USA-made. Club Cabinetry uses American-sourced materials (from North Carolina) and we build your closets in our New Jersey facility that is family owned and operated.

What hardware or accessories can be included in a custom closet design?

Yes! Your closet can be customized with a wide range of hardware and accessories based on how you live. As a standard, all of our drawers are soft-close.

Signature upgrades (most popular in luxury homes):
– Closet islands (extra storage + a true boutique feel)
– Glass cabinet doors (polished, high-end display)
– Jewelry organization (inserts, trays, divider systems)
– Integrated shoe storage (rails, angled shelves, or cubbies)

Other common options we install:
– Pull-out hampers
– Valet rods
– Belt / tie racks
– Pull-out pant racks
– Slide-out baskets
– Purse cubbies
– Adjustable shelving
– Specialty hanging sections (double-hang, long-hang)
– Pull-out mirrors
– LED closet lighting
– Drawer dividers / specialty inserts (watches, sunglasses, etc.)

What closet finishes and colors are available?

We offer a wide range of closet finishes and colors beyond stock white. That includes classic whites and off-whites, natural wood tones, modern matte finishes, and a variety of designer color options depending on the look you want.During your design appointment, we’ll review finish samples and build options that match your home’s style and your budget.

Does your custom closet installation come with a warranty?

Yes. Our custom closets include a warranty on both labor and materials, and because installation is completed by our in-house team, you have one clear point of accountability. If something needs adjustment or replacement, we handle it—no third parties.
